What Caused the Baltimore Bridge Collapse?A state of emergency has been declared by Governor Moore of Maryland after the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed Tuesday, March 16, 2024, in the early morning hours. The collapse occurred shortly after a 948-foot container ship, the Dali, crashed into the bridge. It has been reported that construction workers were repairing potholes and concrete on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Some people have been rescued; however, at least one of them was seriously injured.
The Dali was traveling from Baltimore to Sri Lanka. In the early morning hours of March 16, 2024, the crew notified authorities of an emergency power issue on the vessel and then issued a "mayday" warning before the collision, which alerted authorities to stop more cars from driving over the bridge.
The water is approximately 50 feet deep near the middle of the bridge, and the Port of Baltimore is the deepest harbor in Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, with five public and 12 private terminals. In total, six people lost their lives, and two were seriously injured.
About the Francis Scott Key BridgeAn estimated 35,000 people used the Francis Scott Key Bridge each day. The port of Baltimore ranks 9th in the nation for both total dollar value and tonnage of international cargo. In 2023 alone, the Port of Baltimore collectively handled more than 847,000 autos and light trucks, the most of any U.S. port for the 13th consecutive year. It also ranked first in the nation last year in handling automobiles, light trucks, farm and construction machinery and imported sugar and gypsum.
According to the State of Maryland, the Port of Baltimore generates more than 15,000 direct jobs, with another nearly 140,000 linked to port activities.
Will the State or Federal Government Repair the Francis Scott Key Bridge? No, Maryland officials have decided not to repair the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Instead, they plan to replace it entirely. The new bridge is expected to be completed by fall 2028, with an estimated cost ranging from $1.7 billion to $1.9 billion. The decision to replace rather than repair the bridge underscores the extensive damage caused by the collapse and the need for a more robust and modern structure to ensure safety and functionality in the future.
Has Your Family Been Affected by a Workplace Fatality? If your family recently lost a loved one in a fatal workplace accident, it is important you take a few minutes to understand your rights and what you can do to pursue them. Under Maryland law, your family may be entitled to workers’ compensation death benefits; however, you shouldn’t assume that obtaining benefits is as easy as filling out an application. The truth is insurance companies make the initial decision on whether to pay out on a workers’ compensation claim, which means they are looking for any way to deny the claim.
